Toponímia urbana: escolas municipais palmenses com nomes de mulheres

Abstract

The names of places are important points of reference for understanding the language, culture, politics and other social factors of people throughout history. The aim of this qualitative and bibliographic study was to investigate the female toponyms that name schools in Palmas, the capital of the state of Tocantins. As well as the political, sociocultural, and gender conditions that favored these designations. For this, we adopted Dick's onomasiological inductive method (1990) and relied on theoretical and methodological contributions from Dick (1986, 1990, 1992, 1996, 1998, 2002), Seabra (2004, 2006), and Andrade (2010, 2016). Regarding female toponymy, the works addressed were of Nader (2007), Antiqueira (2011), Silva (2013), Araújo (2013), and Ferreira (2019). For the conceptualization and discussion of gender were used the concepts and values of Scott (1995), Butler (2003), Saffioti (2015), and Hooks (2019). Among a corpus of 80 educational units, 20 anthropotoponyms and 01 hagiotoponym that reference women's names were identified. The results obtained demonstrate that the act of naming schools with female names can be a relevant way of promoting gender equity, cultural diversity, and social inclusion in the toponymy of Tocantins’ capital. Therefore, this paper contributes to the appreciation of women's memory in the city.
