Razão e sensibilidade e sem prada nem nada: representações do contexto sociocultural feminino na literatura e no cinema

Abstract

The sociocultural historical trajectory of women throughout history has gone through various phases, from periods of invisibility and subjugation to male decisions about what was or was not expected of them, to active participation in movements demanding their rights, access to education, and equal insertion into the labor market. Many obstacles were overcome for women to have, in contemporary times, a more influential participation in social spheres. Consequently, various media portray these moments, such as literature and cinematic works, allowing analysis of representations of the female sociocultural context throughout humanity. Therefore, this research explores the novel Sense and Sensibility (1811), by Jane Austen, and the film From Prada to Nada (2011), directed by Angel Gracia, from a comparative perspective, aiming to investigate the main details of the works listed and how they were determined according to the social rules of the time in which each story was presented, and the differences in the plots of the productions due to the temporal difference of two centuries in between them. This research is based on documentary and comparative methodology, drawing on the ideas of Hutcheon (2013), Devides (2018), Stam (2006), Lobato (2018), Vasconcelos (1995), Silva (2012), and other authors who contribute to this analysis. In general, the research addresses the feminine in society and the changes that have occurred throughout human history, using literature and cinema as mirrors of lived experiences and sources for investigative comparison.
