A voz de Vanju em Cais da Sagração, de Josué Montello

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the voice of the character Vanju in the novel Cais da Sagração, by Josué Montello, seeking to identify, within this narrative expression, the events through which she shapes her identity, including those related to her death. Although Cais da Sagração has been widely studied, both within and beyond Maranhão, since its publication in 1971, this is the first work to address this theme in the novel from a communicational and narratological perspective.In order to carry out this pioneering study, it was necessary to draw upon the approach of the five active voices in the narrative: that of the internal author, the writer, the narrator, the reader, and the character. The main focus fell on the voice of the character Vanju, in which the study sought to identify her expression, which at first seems to be silenced.Thus, to support this dissertation, the contributions of Tacca (1983), Bakhtin, Plato, Fiorin (2011), Barthes (1988), Dal Farra (1978), and Carmo Gomes (2014) were employed, especially for the analysis of concepts related to the character’s voice in fiction.
