Abstract: This work is a conceptual theoretical research in the field of psychoanalysis that aimed to investigate the forms of use, objectives and meanings related to drugs throughout history, up to contemporaneity, seeking to understand the phenomenon of drug addiction present in consumer society as a symptom present in the social field. It is evident that the use of psychoactive substances has always been present among human beings, on the other hand, it is noted that throughout history the way in which drugs are seized and consumed has been changing. With the advent of the technical-scientific model of neoliberalism, the emergence of new drugs created in laboratories was noted. As products of the era of science, there was an emptying of the phármakon effect present in the drug, where it is only perceived in its toxic character. Thus, drug addiction emerges as an effect of scientific and capitalist discourses, in which, in the consumer society, drugs appear not only as a commodity, but also as psychopharmaceuticals as an alternative to deal with the inherent malaise of human beings. However, unlike other consumer goods, in the use of drugs, there is the possibility of transforming into a different form of phallic jouissance socially present, where the drug addict sees himself in a cynical jouissance that tries to break with the Other's desire, pointing out a contradiction and denouncing a hole in the consumer society.
