Quando o “final feliz” é o casamento: uma leitura comparativa de Orgulho e Preconceito e Cinderela

Abstract

This monography brings, as its main object, the contrastive analysis of the character Elizabeth Bennet in the English novel Pride and Prejudice (1813), by the writer Jane Austen, that deals with the destiny of women according to the possibilities given to them by patriarchal society; and the fairy tale “Cinderella” (1697) published in the volume Contes de ma mere l'Oye (Mother Goose Tales, 1697) by Charles Perrault. Using as method the procedures of Comparative Literature, we will analyze both narratives in relation to the way they describe the role of women in society and the expectation surrounding the institution of marriage. From different periods and contexts, the plot of both stories reaches a comedic ending that exists only through the meeting of the heroine with the “ideal” partner.
